Norway is lagging behind its Nordic neighbors in the utilization of health data. This is the conclusion of a report by BCG, which highlights Finland and Denmark as the Nordic leaders. The report is widely acknowledged among healthcare stakeholders in Norway and is clearly reflected in the IT strategies of most healthcare organizations. Control over health data and increased standardization for both primary and secondary use are seen as necessary to enable technological development and innovation.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key solution to many of the healthcare sector’s challenges. The technology promises increased efficiency, better decision support, and more precise, personalized treatment. Currently, AI is primarily used in radiology, based on pre-developed solutions from abroad. However, there is a growing awareness of the need for local development and customization based on national population data.

Finland has established itself as a frontrunner in data access, secondary use, and the development of AI in healthcare. Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) is a prime example, with ambitious AI projects for rare diseases. At the same time, Oslo University Hospital (OUS) plays a central role in leveraging data and AI to strengthen operational management and improve the utilization of health data in Norway’s specialist healthcare services.

In this session, we gain insight into how HUS and OUS work with data and AI from two different yet complementary perspectives – and how Nordic university hospitals can become a driving force for innovation and sustainable development in the healthcare sector.
